Car stands upright against traffic bollard and catches fire after crash: ‘Bizarre’

In the category ‘you are not allowed to park here’, a man in Best made it very colorful. In the night from Saturday to Sunday, he crashed on Sint-Oedenrodeseweg, after which his white car came to a stop upright against a signpost. A few minutes later, the car caught fire again.

Several videos of the spectacle were posted on Dumpert on Sunday. The images show how the man, according to local residents the driver, stands in his bare bark next to the burning car.

“He stood there and rummaged around in his car. He looked for his phone and pretended nothing serious was going on,” says local resident Stefan. “The police took him away because he said he had been drinking.” At first glance, the man did not appear injured.

The accident happened around ten to one at night at the intersection of Sint-Oedenrodeseweg and Vleutstraat. Stefan was then in bed, but he was still awake.

“I looked outside and saw a car propped up against a pole.”

“We went to the fair in Best in the evening and just wanted to sleep. Then we suddenly heard squealing tires and a huge bang. I looked outside and saw a car standing upright against a pole. I couldn’t believe my eyes,” says Stefan.

“I walked outside and called 112. There was a man at the car who was not wearing a shirt. It was bizarre, especially when the car also caught fire. Then I called 112 again to say that the fire brigade was also but had to come.” Firefighters extinguished the fire and the burned-out car was towed away in the middle of the night.

“The municipality may now replace that pole.”

After a short night’s sleep, local residents look back in astonishment. “That pole had been crooked for a long time, probably because of trucks that grazed it,” says Harrie, who lives tens of meters away. “Believe it or not, people from the municipality straightened that pole two days ago with a strap.”

According to him, the situation is not much better now. The pole is now not only very crooked, it is also blackened. Harrie: “So it’s a good thing that the municipality didn’t decide to replace that pole two days ago. They can do that now.”
