Car hits herd of sheep on highway, twelve animals die

A herd of sheep was hit on Monday around five o’clock on the A4 motorway, near Dinteloord. A driver was injured and at least twelve sheep were killed. A total of thirty animals had broken loose and were walking on the highway. Several cars also collided with each other.

According to a police spokesman, she received several reports of stray sheep on the highway on Monday afternoon.

Driven full into the herd
At first she spoke of a collision with the herd by several cars. Later in the evening it turned out that it is one car that drove into the herd.

“Part of the sheep died in the collision. The rest of the animals were removed from the road by the police and Rijkswaterstaat,” said the police.

It was also not clear earlier how many animals had died, later in the evening the police reported that twelve of the thirty sheep in total did not survive the collision. Images show sheep lying lifeless on the highway.

Broken loose
The injured driver has been checked into an ambulance, it is not clear how serious the injuries are. The police have now spoken to the owner of the sheep, the animals would have broken loose and ended up on the highway.

The A4 was initially completely closed, but the road was later partly released. The A4 will be fully open again from eight o’clock.
