Car fires can no longer be counted on one hand here: ‘Angrily ex again now’

Residents of the apartment buildings on Urkhovenseweg in Eindhoven are hardly surprised when another car is on fire. Ten cars have already been set on fire in the street in recent months. Two more cars went up in flames on Friday morning. “I really don’t know where to park my car anymore,” says resident Guy de Werd, concerned.

A large black soot spot can be seen in the parking lot in front of the apartment on Friday afternoon. There are shards of glass, some burnt car parts and a burning smell. A resident who has just come home looks around in surprise as he parks his car. “I was not at home last night and suddenly saw a large fire spot here,” says Wais. “We’re lucky it was on this side of the parking lot and not the side of the apartment. Otherwise it could have been much worse.”

Thom van Zeijl also saw the sea of flames from his apartment. A Fiat burned down completely and his housemate’s car, which was standing next to it, also went up in flames. According to Thom, the owner of the Fiat is almost certain that the fire was started. “She told my roommate that she thinks her boyfriend’s ex set her car on fire,” says Thom. “Apparently all her tires were also punctured earlier.”

“I can’t imagine that they would just target a random car.”

This is the umpteenth time that cars are on fire in the parking lots near the flats on Urkhovenseweg. Last summer, eight cars were set on fire in one night. When two cars were on fire again at the beginning of this year, residents demanded that camera surveillance be installed.

“I’ve been living here for a few months now and thought this was a great neighborhood, but apparently not,” says Thom van Zeijl. According to Guy de Werd, it is the first time that his apartment has been hit. “Luckily my car was on the side of the street, but it was a bit of a shock. You no longer know where to park your car.”

Other residents are less concerned. “My car is also in the parking lot, but I can’t imagine that they would just arrest a random car,” says Will Van der Sterren. Rosemary keeps her fingers crossed that it is not her car that is on fire. “But it’s just a tin and luckily mine is well insured. So I’m not really that worried.”
