The incident happened around 7 p.m. on Europalaan towards Zele. A Mercedes drove there on the way home just after the owner had returned to collect his vehicle from the garage. The vehicle had broken down and needed a new part. It is not clear how the car caught fire. The occupants were able to get out of the car in time and were unharmed, but the car is ready for the scrap heap. Due to the vehicle fire, a lane in the direction of Lokeren was closed to traffic.
