Car catches fire after police chase in Breda

A motorist was injured in a police pursuit through Breda on Thursday night. Around 2 a.m., the driver ignored a stop sign he received from the officers – who were driving a nondescript police car – and drove off. The driver crashed on Rithsestraat and the car caught fire.

The high-speed chase lasted only a few minutes. During the chase, the driver stopped briefly to allow a co-driver to get out. Officers approached this co-driver briefly, but he is not a suspect, according to the police.

Hospital
The driver suffered back injuries and was taken to hospital in an ambulance. “The man is a suspect and will be questioned after treatment for his injuries and possibly arrested.”

The officers wanted to arrest the driver because they suspected that drugs were being transported by car. The man refused to take an alcohol test.

Damage big
The fire brigade was called in to extinguish the burning car. The car wreck has been taken away for further investigation. It has not yet been announced whether drugs have been found in the car.

At the spot where the chase ended, the damage is still extensive Friday morning. A fence is badly damaged and the ground and some trees are blackened. “It was a lot of noise,” says a local resident. “I only stayed inside because I heard that the co-driver had got out.”

According to the local residents, the wooded piece of land belongs to someone from Etten-Leur, who recreates there. It is not inhabited.
