Capturing and swimming ban due to blue-green algae on the Bossuit-Kortrijk canal

Blue-green algae mainly occur in water where there is little current and in warm weather. When blue-green algae die in a floating layer, toxic substances can be released that can be harmful to humans and animals. Complaints after contact range from irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract to diarrhea and vomiting.

Due to the presence of blue-green algae, it is therefore temporarily prohibited to capture water from the Bossuit-Kortrijk canal for spraying consumption and fodder crops and for drinking water for livestock. For safety and health reasons, there is also a temporary swimming ban in the open water swimming zone of the canal. Registered swimmers and clubs have been informed. Water recreation such as kayaking and pleasure boating is still allowed, as long as no contact is made with the water. For the time being, supping is only possible on the old Leiearm, from the Budatip to Buda Beach.

The ban will remain in effect until the floating layer has disappeared from the zone and the concentration of toxins is sufficiently low. Blue-green algae disappear again at lower temperatures and more rain. The city services and De Vlaamse Waterweg regularly carry out measurements and reopen the canal as soon as possible.
