The municipality of Capelle aan den IJssel is eligible for 35.5 million euros from the government to build new homes more quickly in the Rivium. The money will be used to make the new residential and work district easily accessible by bicycle and public transport.
More homes go hand in hand with more traffic. But there is plenty of car traffic in Capelle, so the municipality prefers to invest the extra millions for the Rivium District in facilities for bicycles and public transport. “With the money we can realize infrastructural changes more quickly,” says alderman Harriët Westerdijk. She mentions the expansion of the ParkShuttle, the mooring place for the waterbus, but also various bicycle paths.
Due to the housing shortage, the government is asking municipalities and provinces to accelerate the construction of homes. Seventy projects have been selected from the proposals from the country to receive a contribution. Capelle is one of them and will receive 35.5 million.
In the coming years, the Rivium will be converted into a modern neighborhood for living and working. A number of office buildings will be converted into homes, other buildings will be demolished and replaced by residential towers. This will add about 5000 homes in Capelle.
