“Can’t wait”: Sabine Lisicki receives wild card for Berlin

Former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki receives a wild card for the WTA tournament in Berlin.

“That’s the plan. Sabine deserves it,” said organizer Edwin Weindorfer. The 33-year-old tennis player is happy about this offer. “I can’t wait to play in the main draw at the Steffi Graf Stadium,” she said. The lawn event takes place from June 17th to 25th.

Lisicki had to pause for a year and a half because of a serious knee injury and had meanwhile dropped out of the world rankings. After her comeback in spring 2022, she fought her way back and is currently at position 300.

“My goal is to be so good again at some point that I no longer need wild cards. But they are important because you don’t get many points in the small tournaments and it takes a long time for the ranking to go up,” said Lisicki . She still holds the world record at 210.8 kilometers per hour.

Lisicki is satisfied with the start of 2023. “Quarterfinals and semifinals, that was good,” she said of her participation in smaller tournaments in Mexico and the United States. The television station ServusTV wants to shoot a documentary with Lisicki about her way to the tournament in Berlin.
