Cannabis becomes legal: 10 German songs about marijuana

On the occasion of the Bundestag’s decision to legalize cannabis, we are dedicating ourselves to 10 stoner songs.

February 23, 2024 is a day that will remain in the memory of marijuana lovers: The German Bundestag gave the green light for the (partial) legalization of cannabis.

The law introduced by the traffic light government stipulates, among other things, that the cultivation and possession of certain amounts of marijuana and hashish for personal consumption should be legal for adults from April 1, 2024.

Adults aged 18 and over are generally permitted to possess up to 25 grams of cannabis for personal consumption. From now on, adults are allowed to have a maximum of three cannabis plants and up to 50 grams of cannabis in their own home for personal consumption. A detailed overview of the law can be found on the official website of the Ministry of Health.

On this occasion, we take a look at ten German songs about marijuana.

1. Dynamite Deluxe “Green Glasses”

24 years before the Bundestag decision, the Hamburg hip-hop crew Dynamite Deluxe around frontman Samy Deluxe celebrated cannabis consumption with the song “Green Glasses,” which has long since become a classic. “Everything is cool as long as I chill enough / Wrap the grass in bags, fill my lungs with puffs / The green glasses, without them I would be scared of life / They let me see sunshine where there is rain“ says the song – it can be assumed that not all parents were thrilled when this song boomed through their children’s rooms.

2. Stefan Raab “We smoke weed”

There was a time when Stefan Raab managed to make a catchy song out of everything on “TV Total”. Sometimes the chain link fence, pronounced in East German, had to be used, another time a funny utterance of “We smoke pot” inspired him to write a (not entirely serious) weed anthem.

3. Marsimoto “Weed Street”

Marsimoto is the alter ego of rapper Marteria, with whom he not only lives out his preference for high-pitched alien vocals, but also for grass songs. There’s a lot to choose from here, and for once we don’t choose the Marsi track “Chillen”, but rather “Weed Street”.

4. Joint venture “Smoking hashish makes you harmless”

But it doesn’t always have to be hip-hop: The fabulous songwriter duo Joint Venture around Martin Simon, who died much too early, and his colleague Götz Widmann showed us with acoustic guitars and a lot of humor that smoking hashish is not only a bit slow, but also very harmless might.

5. Olexesh – “Purple Haze”

Like Jimi Hendrix, rapper and Vanessa Mai duet partner Olexesh also wrote a song called “Purple Haze” many years later. “I have 10 grams in the paper / Give me 2Pac Hellrazor / Smoke Purple Haze, Mick Jagger / Me from behind, you at the steering wheel“ says the song. From April 1st, the lyrical self in question can legally possess 10 grams!

6. Benjie – “Ganja Smoker”

A classic German stoner song is “Ganja Smoka” by Benjie. “I smoke my ganja all day /No matter who says anything against it / I smoke until I don’t like it anymore / Don’t do anything to anyone and I’ll still be charged“, he sings in it. The lyrical self should no longer be accused as long as the possession remains within limits.

7. Mono & Nikitaman “Weed is legal”

It’s so far in Germany that weed is legal. I’ll smoke you quietly and secretly one last time“, sang Mono & Nikitaman in 2004. What the German-Austrian duo didn’t realize at the time: twenty years later the title would actually apply.

8. Helge Schneider – “Mörchen-Lied”

At this point we don’t just want to present stoner songs, we also want to include a song that warned urgently about the dangers of green grass. In the “Mörchen-Lied”, also called “Helge’s Mörchen-Lied”, Helge Schneider warns us about the drug. “Marijuana is not good,” the “singing man’s cake” repeats several times – and also makes solid arguments for it. Conclusion: Better do it!

9. Seeed – “Sensimilla” (feat. Denyo)

Together with beginner rapper Denyo, Seed published a hymn of praise for Sensimilla – an unpolluted cannabis plant that does not develop seeds and therefore has a high concentration of cannabinoids and terpenes.

10. Creme De La Creme – “Hashisch Kakalake”

Last but not least, we would also like to remember “Hashisch Kakalake” by the German hip-hop band Creme De La Creme, which tells the story of two cannabis-loving cockroaches.
