The traitors is a mix of the wildly popular program Who is the mole? and the game The werewolves of Wakkerdam† A group of celebrities is dropped in a castle somewhere in the Netherlands. There they have to work together to win a large silver treasure. Difficult, since there are three traitors in the group. The difference with Who is the mole? is that as a viewer you now know who the traitors are.
Traitors and faithful
Each night, the traitors are allowed to ‘kill’ a fellow candidate to get closer to the treasure themselves. Meanwhile, the other participants try to expose the villains. Every day they can vote someone out to try and eliminate the traitors. But since the traitors themselves also vote, that’s not easy.
Mentally heavy
The fact that the candidates are engaged in the game 24/7 seems to have a lot of impact on their mental state. “When I got home I had to recover for a few days”, Babette van Veen explains to the AP† “I was so high in energy and constantly had the feeling ‘I have to keep going, I have to pay attention and not slacken’. And then a psychologist called to see how you were doing.”
Psychological test
According to Stefano Keizers, another candidate, all participants also undergo a psychological test beforehand to see whether they would be able to handle the program mentally. Although the outcome of that does not matter much, according to him. “The more unstable you seem, the more likely you are to be cast, I think. That’s why I appear so often in these kinds of programs,” he jokes. Keizers also noticed that his trust in people changed as a result of the game. “You come out as a different person, you have to take that into account.”
