Canada wins top game against USA

Canada remain firmly in their sights for a ticket to Qatar in World Cup qualifiers. In CONCACAF’s top game, the league leaders won 2-0 (0-0) against second-placed USA and now have 22 points under their belt. The USA remain in second place with 18 points ahead of Mexico (17), who meet Costa Rica on Monday night.

With the success, Canada fueled a lot of self-confidence on the way to their first World Cup participation since 1986, four games are still left for the leaders. When it was below zero in Hamilton/Ontario, Besiktas striker Cyle Larin (7th) scored early for the hosts. It was Larin’s 23rd goal in 47 international appearances, making the 26-year-old Canada’s record goalscorer. Sam Adekugbe (90+5) increased shortly before the end.

The USA, with the two Bundesliga pros Tyler Adams (RB Leipzig) and Chris Richards (TSG Hoffenheim) in the starting line-up, had a great chance to equalize in the 48th minute after a corner, but Weston McKennie failed with a header at the excellent Canadian keeper Milan Borjan.
