Canada qualified for the 2nd World Cup – Larin & Co. defeat Jamaica

USA & Mexico as followers

Canada’s national team has qualified for a World Cup for the second time in its history. National coach John Herdman’s team beat Jamaica 4-0 on CONCACAF’s penultimate qualifier and have secured participation in the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year. The only World Cup with Canada so far was the 1986 tournament in Mexico.

Cyle Larin (13th minute) and Tajon Buchanan (44th) scored the two goals before half-time in Toronto on Sunday to give the league leaders a reassuring lead. In the closing minutes, Junior Hoilett (82′), who once played for St. Pauli and Paderborn, and Jamaica’s Adrian Mariappa increased the lead to 4-0 with an own goal (88′).

In the qualifiers for North and Central America, the top three teams are guaranteed a ticket to the World Cup in Qatar. Canada (28 points) is followed by the USA and Mexico with 25 points each, who won their games against Panama (5-1) and Honduras (1-0) on the night. Costa Rica, who won in El Salvador, is fourth, three points behind and with a worse goal difference. The rank qualifies for the playoff round against a team from Oceania. Jamaica had no chance of qualifying before the game.
