The sun is shining and it’s the weekend. So spring maintenance of the grill should be done now. Weber’s Axel Thulé gives the best tips.
Have you dug out the grill? Before the sizzling sausage dream comes true, remember to clean the grill.
The high temperature of the grill quickly kills any bacteria, so the grill does not always have to be spotlessly clean. But despite that, before the opening of the grilling season, the steel parts of the grill should be cleaned and protected with the intended cleaning agent.
Cleaning a dirty grill grate, on the other hand, is easier when you first heat up the grill properly. Also, remember to check the gas grill hose and grease control system.
1. Clean the outside of the grill
Just like a car, the grill should also be cleaned regularly. The grill can be well rinsed with a garden hose and washed with a soft brush. However, remember to dry the surface of the grill. It can also be treated with a cleaning agent intended for the cover material. Stainless steel and enameled surfaces have their own substances. The cleaner keeps the grill clean and protects it from rust stains.
2. Clean the inside of the grill and check the grease management systems
Over time, burnt-on food residues and grease accumulate inside the grill. Food and fat falling through the grill grate stick to the bottom of the grill or accumulate in the gas grill’s fat management system.
Check the condition of the grill’s lid, base and grease collector and clean the parts with the intended substance if necessary. Empty or replace the drip tray of the gas grill with a new one.
3. Check the condition of the gas grill hose
It is a good idea to change the gas grill hose and pressure regulator every two years to prevent gas leaks. You can check the tightness of the hose by spraying the joints with soapy water. If there is a leak at the connection, the soap solution will start bubbling when you turn on the gas. You can see the condition of the hose by folding it: if there are cracks at the bend, it must be replaced.
4. Heat the grill and brush the grates clean
The hotter the grill, the easier it is to clean. If the grill grate is dirty, you should let the grill heat up properly, i.e. at least 15 minutes. Brush the hot grill grate clean with a grill brush. Larger food residues can be removed with a grill scraper. If the food remains have stuck tightly, you can use a grill cleaner intended for grill grates. Never wash the grill grate in the dishwasher.
5. Prevent mess already during grilling
You can reduce the need for cleaning after grilling already while grilling. Wipe off excess marinade from the surface of the meat before grilling to prevent it from sticking to the grill grate. You can also prevent food from sticking by using a non-stick spray.
6. Clean the grill grates immediately after use
Brush the grate clean while the grill is still hot: put the gas grill bulbs on full, let the food residue burn off and quickly brush the grate clean.
The grill can be protected by covering it with a protective cover when not in use.
