Can the municipality of Hoogeveen have a special tree cut down for economic reasons? | Statement of the week

The municipality has applied for an environmental permit to have a pedunculate oak on the Albartsweg in Hollandscheveld cut down. However, this tree is on a municipal list of trees worthy of protection.

This list has been created so that cutting down trees produces less paperwork. If the tree is on the list, Hoogeveners always need a permit. If the tree is not on the list, it is not.

The tree that is now under discussion is therefore on that list of trees worthy of protection. In ‘very special cases’, a permit can be issued for these trees to cut down such trees. As can be read on the municipal site.

This is for the following reasons:

  • The safety of the tree can no longer be guaranteed
  • The tree has been affected by an infectious disease or pest, making it a source of infection for other trees
  • The owner is disproportionately inconvenienced by a tree

Economic reason

However, the reason why the municipality believes that the tree on the plot on Albartsweg should be appended is economic. A transformer station of Tennet and Rendo is to be built on the site of the pedunculate oak. That electricity station is needed to connect new companies to Riegmeer.

According to the municipality, the transformer station cannot be moved to another location on the business park and moving the tree is too expensive, according to the municipality: it costs between 25,000 and 50,000 euros.
