Campsites overcrowded due to the May holiday: ‘Make extra places’

The May holidays have started and that means very busy at the campsites. On the Kurenpolder in Hank, they have even added extra camping spots to receive more guests, which is necessary with glorious weather ahead. “Discover the area nicely.”

Campsites throughout the province will be packed in the coming holidays. The Kurenpolder campsite in Hank is very busy. “We created extra places because we were 100 percent full,” says an employee. For many camping guests, the first weekend of the May holiday mainly consists of building up. The sunny weather will come from Monday, so it’s not a disaster.

A family from Oosterhout has been at the campsite since Wednesday. “Nice and close to home”, the mother laughs. “If we want, we go home and wash. The weather has been good for the past week, but now it is cold. It’s tempting to drive home, but then you’re stuck inside.”

Tim (9) and Thijs (6) from Raamsdonksveer quickly kick a ball while their parents pack the camper. The family lives around the corner, so father went to work from the campsite. The two boys had a good time in Hank. “The playgrounds were the best,” says Thijs.

His big brother Tim turns out to be more of a water rat. “I swam a lot, the two slides were great fun.” They are disappointed that the days at the campsite are over for them. “I want to buy something from my holiday money,” says Thijs, disappointed. Fortunately, he still gets that chance. They are going away with grandparents next week.

A family from the back corner just arrives. With the nice weather in prospect, they are looking forward to the holiday. “Our daughter is going skydiving, we are going swimming, to the Biesbosch. Nice to discover the area.”

It is also busy at other campsites. They were already quite full at camping de Flaasbloem in Chaam, but the sunny weather of next week will add to that. “The cottages are already fully booked this May, but thanks to the beautiful weather, the camping spots are also slowly running out.”

“People ask at the counter if there is room.”

Guests also flock to the larger holiday parks. “We have about three thousand places and it is completely full. People come to us at the desk to ask if there is still room,” says an employee of Vakantiepark Dierenbos in Vinkel. No fewer than 212 new guests will arrive at camping de Paal in Bergeijk this Saturday.

Which corners of our country the guests come from differs per campsite. While there are mainly Dutch people at camping De Kienehoef in Sint Oedenrode and many people from the region come to camp at the camping in Hank, there are also a few Germans at Bospark ‘t Wolsven in Mierlo.
