‘Campfire stoker’ in Amstelveen’s office building was also involved in the fire

The homeless man who was found near a campfire in an office building in Amstelveen last Monday was also present in the building when a fire raged there a few days earlier.

That’s what the police told NH. During the night from last Saturday to Sunday, a major fire raged on the third floor of the complex. The fire was discovered by a local resident, who saw a bright glow in the building from a considerable distance and alerted the emergency services.

After the rushed fire brigade had extinguished the fire with the help of ladder trucks, a man of no fixed abode was found during an inspection of the building, the police said. The man has not been arrested, “but we have noted his details,” a police spokesperson told NH. A spokesperson for the fire brigade said at the time that people were probably living illegally in the building. Text continues under the read-too

When the emergency services responded to a new fire alarm in the building last Monday, it turned out that a campfire was burning on the first floor of the complex. The fire was still under control at the time, “but it was clear that it had been lit,” the police spokesman said.

Although the police suspect the homeless man’s involvement in the fires, he has not been arrested. However, his details have been recorded again. “And we warned him not to come there again.”

Site secured by police

The building was previously used by the Ballast Nedam company and also served as an asylum seeker center for a while. The site is secured by the police and a private security company, according to a sign in front of the door.

“This means that we check regularly,” said a spokesperson. There are no cameras to monitor the building.
