The boom of vanlife continues unstoppable, in what is now confirmed as a real golden age for itinerant travel. Year after year, motorhome trips, with their mix of adventure and freedom, conquer more and more people: this is confirmed by the data from Yescapa, the platform for motorhome sharing leader in Europe which, as per tradition, analyzed the trend of bookings made in the period between January and December 2022. The sample examined is 820,000 active users, of which 50,000 Italians. Even compared to an excellent 2021 recovery, last year’s numbers showed a further increase: confirmations on Yescapa, in fact, recorded an increase of +29% (from 55,000 to 71,000), for a total of over 530,000 days o 1,450 years of travel on the road. An even greater increase was recorded on the Italian website (yescapa.it) of the French company, with a +95% of confirmed bookings in 2022, equivalent to over 30,000 rental days or more than 80 years on the road.

THE AVERAGE AGE IS DOWN

From 2018, the year of its debut on the Italian market, to date, Yescapa has been able to detect and contribute to a sharp drop in the average age of users: if in 2019, for example, only 30% of guest were in the 25-35 age range, in 2022 this figure rose to 52% of the total. In this time frame the average Italian camper is rejuvenated of six years, from almost 42 in 2019 to 36 in 2022: a rather significant run backwards, demonstrating the predilection for this type of travel on the part of the younger age groups. According to Yescapa’s analyses, Italian motorhome owners leave above all in sweet company, for a romantic getaway in the name of adventure: 50% of bookings, in fact, were made by couples (+4% compared to the previous year), followed by 25% family trips and 20% group holidays with friends. Both trends (average age in decline and preference for traveling as a couple on the road) are also reflected in the choice of vehicle type: the surge in the demand for vans stands out (with +143% on 2019 and +10% on 2021).

CANARIES IN THE FIRST ROW

The analysis of the destinations booked on yescapa.it reveals, first of all, the desire to travel abroad: 66% of Italians, in fact, have booked a vehicle outside the national borders for their holidays on the road, with an increase compared to the 52% seen in 2021. On the podium, the undisputed queens of bookings are the Canary Islands (14% thanks, in particular to Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Tenerife). Lisbon follows in second place (11%), the Portuguese capital perfect as a base for exploring an equally fascinating country. Bronze medal to the Balearic Islands (6% with Palma de Mallorca and Menorca), further demonstration of the love of the Italians for the Iberian countries and for the Spanish archipelagos. A predilection for the islands that is also confirmed in Italy: among the most popular inland destinations, Sardinia dominates with 12% and Sicily with 9%, followed at a distance, with about 3%, by Rome and Milan (points of strategic starting points for very varied itineraries). And if Italians make up the clear majority of campers traveling to discover the peninsula and islands (51%), there are also many French (19%) and Spanish (13%) who choose our country for a tour on the road.

economic impact

The bookings and record numbers of 2022 have led to strong growth in Yescapa’s revenues, with +91% in Italy compared to the previous year. A positive economic impact which is also reflected in the owner who make their vehicle available on the platform: Italian owners, in fact, had a total profit of 2.4 million euros in 2022, about double compared to 2021. “A winning choice, that of motorhome sharingwhich we at Yescapa have been encouraging in Europe for eleven years and in Italy for five – comments Dario Femiani, country manager of Yescapa Italia – Thanks to the constantly growing demand for recreational vehicles, owners who decide to share their vehicle on our site they can only amortize the annual cost of its maintenance (in just six weeks of sharing), but also obtain an important profit, as evidenced by the 2022 data of our platform”. Furthermore, as a solution all-in-oneThe motorhome sharing it is also a winning formula for the environment: if it is true that traveling necessarily leads to an increase in CO2 emissions, it has been demonstrated that doing so in a camper is one of the most reasonable solutions in terms of environmental impact.
