Camilla Kemp writes surfing history – German qualified

Surfing is part of the Olympic Games for the second time. German women were not represented in Tokyo. But this summer it will.

Camilla Kemp left the water in Arecibo, Puerto Rico with a beaming smile. The 28-year-old knew she had made it. The 2024 Olympics will take place with the German living in Portugal. Kemp is making history and is the first German surfer to take part in the games.

“What a day! I just qualified for the 2024 Olympics in Paris. I’m speechless right now. Dreams really do come true,” Kemp wrote in an Instagram post after her success.

Surfing is only at the Olympics for the second time this year; no athlete from the German Surfing Association (DWV) made it into the 20-strong starting line-up at the Tokyo Games. In the men’s category, Leon Glatzer was the only German to qualify and took 17th place in the shortboard – this time the hopes rest on Tim Elter, who is currently still fighting for his ticket to the World Championships in Arecibo.

However, the summer competitions are not held on a coast on the French mainland, but on the island of Tahiti/French Polynesia.
