Camilla is candid in her debut interview in British Vogue: “It’s not easy”

“The day begins with an apology”, opens Vogue-interviewer Gilles Hattersley the article“Sorry you’ve got to photograph an old bat this morning”, Camilla is said to have been the first to say to the photographer who was going to capture her in Clarence House (where she lives with Prince Charles). Photos in which Camilla only wears outfits from his own wardrobe. In the color “menopausal mauve” – her words. Camilla is no stranger to self-mockery. However, it was certainly not always a laugh in her royal existence.

Camilla candid about all criticism

“It’s not easy,” she says of the time she was sentenced over her divorce and relationship with Charles at the time of his marriage to Diana. “I was under scrutiny for so long that you just have to find a way to live with it. Nobody likes to be stared at and, you know, criticized all the time. But I think I kind of got over it in the end. You have to get on with life.”

Camilla on her relationship with Charles

In the interview, Camilla also says that her relationship with Prince Charles is sometimes hard work, because they both have a full agenda. “Sometimes it’s hard, but we always try to see each other. Sometimes it’s short, but we like to have a cup of tea together to discuss the day,” says the duchess. “It’s nice to have a chat then. Although I think it’s best to sit together in the same room and read a book. We don’t have to say anything. We just sit together.”

Camilla about her grandchildren

Her own grandchildren, with whom she regularly sends messages back and forth via Whatsapp, offer a nice distraction. “It is very nice to receive such a message. We learn from the young people and they learn from us. That is how it has always been.” She also likes to spoil her grandchildren, as befits a real grandmother. “That’s the nice thing about being a grandma, that you can give them things their parents don’t allow them to have,” Camilla laughs.
