Rigobert Song is no longer the coach of the Cameroon national football team.
A few weeks after the round of 16 exit in the Africa Cup, association president Samuel Eto’o announced the 47-year-old’s dismissal on Wednesday in an interview with the French TV channel “France 24”.
“We have not achieved our objectives and my executive committee and I see no possibility of extending the contract,” Eto’o said. The former star striker did not name a successor.
Song took over Cameroon at the beginning of 2022 and managed to qualify for the World Cup straight away with the “Indomitable Lions”. In Qatar it was over after the group phase, but the five-time Africa Cup winners against Brazil (1-0) achieved a respectable success.
The continental tournament ended in the round of 16 against Nigeria (0-2) – a disappointment.
Song, who won the Africa Cup of Nations twice with Cameroon (2000 and 2002), only managed six wins with nine defeats and eight draws in his 23 games as national coach.
As a player, Song was once under contract with 1. FC Köln for six months. In the 2001/02 season he played 16 Bundesliga games for FC.
