Camera surveillance must prevent nuisance during the turn of the year in Midwoud and Opperdoes

The municipality of Medemblik hopes to prevent nuisance during the turn of the year with preventive camera surveillance. The cameras will be installed on both the Gouw in Opperdoes and the Lent in Midwoud.

In Opperdoes it is tradition to make a bonfire on the Gouw during New Year’s Eve, the municipality writes. Despite this, no organizer has reported for the bonfire, but it is expected that one will come.

Because according to the municipality, the tradition entails nuisance and risks, measures are being taken. For example, in addition to camera surveillance, there will be a container in which the bonfire can be kept, no volatile substances may be used and only clean wood may be set on fire. The material for the bonfire may not be stacked higher than two meters and the police will be present.

Demolitions

Heavy fireworks were set off in Midwoud last year at the Lent, vandalism was done and young people provoked the police. To prevent this from happening this year, the municipality is also taking measures here, for example through camera surveillance. Police are also present and contact is being made with the young people, according to the municipality.
