Camaraderie evening may still take place, the Council of State ignores the ban of the City of Ypres

Egwin Six, General Assembly of the Yserwake: “The Council of State has made it clear that our constitutional rights of freedom of assembly and the right to freedom of expression remain intact. The Council of State has accepted all our resources. The permit was indeed applied for on time. All necessary information was given. The signed charter (dd. 16/6/2023) – with a comment that was never withdrawn – for the Yserwake naturally also applies to the Camaraderie evening.”

“It has actually come a long way that an organization has to go to the Council of State to be able to organize a ‘regular’ cantus with a DJ afterwards. After receiving the application, the city of Ypres did nothing but make the conditions narrower and narrower until nothing was possible. In the end, the city of Ypres already had to know which songs from the student codex would be sung and which music numbers would be played. No other association has ever been asked this question, and it tends towards undemocratic control, unworthy of a rule of law.

The political pressure from the left, the ‘peace collective’ and the trade union on the council of the city of Ypres must have been really heavy to want to curtail the fundamental right to freedom of expression and the fundamental right to assemble.”

So on Saturday, August 26, the Camaraderie evening will continue, followed by the Yserwake on Sunday, August 27.

We are still waiting for a response from the city.
