Calls from landlines to cell phones quickly become a cost trap

If you have a landline, you probably use it to make calls. But while calls from house to house are usually cheap, calls from landlines to mobile phones are often not at all. This is shown by a current market analysis.

No one uses a landline anymore? Are you kidding me? Are you serious when you say that! A proud 83 percent of private households have a landline connection. This is shown by a recent survey by extra. And landline telephones are an integral part of business facilities and offices anyway. A whole range of people should therefore be interested in how expensive it can be if you call a cell phone from a landline.

That’s how expensive landline calls to cell phones are

Calling a cell phone in Germany from a landline is about as expensive as a cell phone call to Spain or Italy. This is shown by a market analysis by the comparison portal Verivox. Expressed in figures, calls from the fixed network to a cell phone within Germany can cost up to 22 cents per minute.

Because what many people don’t know is that such calls are usually not included in the telephone flat rates. The double or triple flat rates from Internet, landline and possibly TV only cover landline calls, but not connections to the mobile network.

You should therefore be particularly careful when calling back missed calls. Since many now have a cell phone tariff with an all-network flat rate, there is a good chance that they will call a landline number with their cell phone number. If you then call back unsuspectingly, it quickly becomes expensive.

Ten major vendors reviewed

Ten major landline providers were scrutinized for the analysis. The prices ranged from 9.8 to 21.9 cents per minute for calls within Germany from the fixed network to mobile phones. Exception: According to the information provided, O2 does not charge any additional fees for calls from the fixed network to mobile phones within Germany.

This is how you can protect yourself

As is well known, many mobile phone tariffs have so-called all-network flat rates, which include a telephone flat rate for calls to all German landline and mobile networks. In the case of landline telephone tariffs, on the other hand, free calls to German mobile networks are more of an exception, the comparison portal warns. So it can definitely be worth taking a look at the price list for your contract before you pick up the phone. It is better to call a cell phone number back on your cell phone than on a landline. Even if you don’t have an all-network flat rate, the minute prices here are usually significantly cheaper.

Tips for calling abroad

Back to Spain and Italy for a moment. According to Verivox, anyone who wants to call abroad should do so from their landline. According to Verivox, the costs for such a call are usually only one tenth of the mobile phone price.

Extra tip: use the good old call-by-call services. Fixed-line customers of Deutsche Telekom can thus save a lot of money when making calls abroad. At least until the end of 2024, when the popular savings primaries will be finally abolished, TECHBOOK reported.

Call-by-call works in such a way that a special area code is entered before the phone number of the person you want to talk to – namely that of a cheaper provider. The connection is then established via that provider. Read more about the topic here.
