The words of Mayor Greet Buter of the municipality of Deurne about the removal of Dutch protest flags were not cold before the farmers took action again. A group of farmers traveled through Liessel, Vlierden and Deurne on Thursday evening to hang up reversed flags at every intersection and on roundabouts.

Mayor Buter ordered the farmers to remove the flags and protest handkerchiefs themselves before Sunday, otherwise the municipality would do that.

The farmers also hung two flags on the facade of the town hall and the Rabobank building in protest on Thursday evening. At the bank, the word ‘bank’ is covered. The farmers give their own interpretation to the name Rabo: ‘Clean up all farmers’. According to a bystander, the action was friendly.

The flags and farmers’ handkerchiefs have been hung in protest against the cabinet’s nitrogen policy. Mayor Buter said Thursday he understands the farmers’ frustrations, but will not accept this method. “For many residents, the Dutch flag is a symbol of unity and democracy.”
