California wants to ban sales of petrol and diesel cars from 2035 | Abroad

The US state of California wants to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars from 2035. Only emission-free cars may then be sold.

The California Air Resources Board, the body responsible for air quality, will vote on the measure on Thursday. If approved, the measure will establish targets that Governor Gavin Newsom had already put forward in September 2020.

In a first phase, from 2026, a third of new cars should be emission-free. By 2030, the share should grow to two thirds, and from 2035 only electric cars, hydrogen cars and some hybrid vehicles should be sold.

California has long been at the forefront of the energy transition, including by levying additional taxes on gasoline, and with a market of 40 million consumers, local standards have a major impact on production in the United States.

The United Kingdom, Singapore and Israel want to stop selling new diesel and petrol cars by 2030. Norway is aiming for 2025. The European Union is currently negotiating a proposal to ban the sale of these vehicles from 2035.
