The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) today released the ‘National strategy for implementation of the UN Convention on Disability’, together with all ministries involved. This national strategy must significantly improve the position of people with disabilities.

Implementing the UN Convention on Disability

The aim of the strategy is to bring the position of people with disabilities into line with the content of the UN Convention on Disability by 2040 at the latest. This means that we want to be a society in which children, young people and adults with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else to participate and develop. The strategy contains objectives that all parties involved strive to achieve in order to achieve this.

Minister Conny Helder: “This is a very important step that we are taking with the various ministries and many partners to improve the position of people with disabilities. I am very proud of everyone who contributed to this. The goals are crystal clear and it is high time to get started on them. So that everyone in the Netherlands can participate without restrictions.”

Step one: a work agenda

The first step is to create a work agenda with concrete measures to achieve the objectives of the strategy. Just as when developing the strategy, experienced experts, interest groups and parties from the field will contribute ideas about the content of this work agenda. Collaboration with municipalities is also important.

Because the cabinet is outgoing, it is up to the next cabinet to start determining the work agenda for the strategy.
