What do the Dutch consider important in the future of the European Union? This question has been at the heart of the citizens’ dialogue in recent months Look at Europe† Today the final report of the civil dialogue was presented to the Senate and House of Representatives. This concludes the Dutch citizens’ dialogue Look at Europe. The results are used to make recommendations to the EU from European citizens.

The final report is a compilation of previously published results and will be shared with the Conference on the Future of Europe during the plenary session at the end of March. The final report contains opinions, ideas and recommendations from the Dutch to the EU and thus forms the voice of the Netherlands: our view of Europe. In December and January two (interim) reports from Kijk op Europa were published with the opinions, ideas and recommendations of the Dutch. The reports were based on a representative panel survey and in-depth thematic dialogues online and on location.

Recommendations on behalf of all EU citizens

The European Union wants to know from its citizens what they think about Europe. That is why the EU is organizing the Conference on the Future of Europe. As part of the Conference, the Netherlands organized the national citizens’ dialogue Look at Europe. With the publication of the final report, the citizens’ dialogue Look at Europe ends. The European citizens’ panels have also been completed.

In the coming weeks, the Conference will start working on all the results. The final result of the Conference is presented to the Presidency of the Conference: the Presidents of the European Parliament, the Council of Ministers and the European Commission. They have promised to investigate how they can follow up on the recommendations. For the Dutch government, the results also make a valuable contribution to shaping Dutch EU policy.
