The cabinet is exploring a gesture of recognition for Surinamese elderly people. In anticipation of a final decision, € 122 million has been reserved for this in the spring memorandum.

On November 11, 2022, the government announced that it is exploring these options. Minister Schouten for Poverty Policy, Participation and Pensions discussed the intention with the House of Representatives on 17 November. The government then promised to send a letter to the Lower House in the spring with further details.

These are elderly people of Surinamese origin who came to the Netherlands prior to Suriname’s independence on 25 November 1975. They had the expectation that the years in which they lived in Suriname when it was still part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands counted towards their AOW accrual, while this was not the case.
