Currently, children in group 8 take a final test that, together with the school advice, determines the choice to go to VMBO, HAVO or VWO. This early selection leads to unequal educational opportunities, experts say. It has also become increasingly difficult to get to the right place by switching levels at a later age or by stacking courses.
Wiersma says: ,,We have to be prepared to make far-reaching choices in many areas, including selecting later. As far as I’m concerned, we’re going to get started with that, but the question is: how quickly can that be done? Because then we are years further. I’m working out the options now. You will hear more about that this fall. What if a post is above water: the inequality of opportunity that we see now is beyond me.”
