Bystanders tried to save driver of burnt out van

Several bystanders tried to extinguish the burning delivery van on Tuesday morning, which drove on the back of a tanker on an exit of the A16 at Moerdijk. The 25-year-old driver from Bladel died on the spot.

Something went wrong just after ten o’clock. On the exit from the A16 to the A17 near Moerdijk, the van drove full on the stationary tanker. Then the van caught fire.

Bystanders tried to put out the fire before emergency services arrived. So that was to no avail. The man died on the spot.

Police are investigating how the accident could have happened. As a result, the road was closed for a long time. All lanes from the Zonzeel interchange were not reopened until around four o’clock on Tuesday afternoon. The damage to the road surface was repaired in the evenings.
