Bystander buys missing puppy on the street from fake owner and calls the police: ‘This was so sad’ | Home

After a bizarre wandering, a missing puppy was returned to its owner on Sunday. The police took care of the little Labrador on Saturday after a disturbing phone call. Someone is said to have gone for a walk with the dog ‘under strange circumstances’. A bystander even thought the situation was so sad that he made an offer for the animal on the street.

It is a story that raises eyebrows. The officers who received the report about the missing dog in Helmond on Saturday would have done the same. A concerned reporter had taken in a puppy and was looking for its rightful owner.

That search failed because the nine-week-old animal had not yet been chipped. How the Labrador ended up with the reporter makes the situation striking.

During a walk, the dog lover saw the animal being walked. However, the ‘owner’ did so without a decent dog leash. Instead, the puppy was attached to a leash made with sandwich bags tied together.

According to the police, the walker thought this was unacceptable and spoke to the ‘owner’. They found an unusual solution: the bystander could buy the puppy for 20 euros.

That amount was paid on the street, after which the young Labrador immediately changed owners. The walker did not trust the situation and immediately checked whether the animal was chipped. That turned out not to be the case.

Because the reporter was convinced that he had not met the real owner, he called the police. The suspicion turned out to be correct: according to the police, a ‘known repeat offender’ was walking around with the dog.

‘Case closed’

The Helmond police shared a photo of the puppy, which received hundreds of comments. After the massive attention, the real owner quickly came forward, after which the dog was reunited with its owner on Sunday. The police do not make it clear how the Labrador ended up with the known repeat offender.

This is no longer investigated further: ‘The owner has seen our message. For the police, this is the end of the matter.’
