“I didn’t have to think twice about participating,” says the longtime Neukölln resident. “We are noticing the lack of staff here. And if a transfer is missing, the passengers unfortunately have to get off. Then I understand that people are annoyed by it.” Nevertheless, there are always passengers who thank him.

When it comes to politeness, Berlin bus drivers have a special reputation. How does he feel about it? “We are in customer service and of course we have to be friendly – even with a Berliner snout. I greet every passenger. Many are surprised, but everyone greets back.”

The BVG wants to show diversity with the campaign. More than 16,000 employees from more than 80 nations work for the company.

Jonny Nestorovic got his bus driver’s license from the BVG back then. “When I saw an articulated bus for the first time during training, I panicked. My driving instructor took my fears away.” Now he drives the bus as routinely as he drives his car through Berlin.

The biggest challenge? “In addition to cars, especially e-scooter drivers.”
