BVG sends tram in Lichtenberg to new tracks

It should be quieter in the neighborhood of the Nibelungenviertel. There is a new stop at Lichtenberg station.

So far, the trams at Lichtenberg station have rumbled once around the block. That should be over soon. The BVG wants to steer the tram traffic in the Nibelungenviertel in new directions. The goal: less noise for the residents and shorter distances to the train station.

The most important change: Instead of using the single-track Fanningerstraße, the trains on lines 21 and 37 will in future run on two tracks via Siegfriedstraße.

A turning system is to be built in the cul-de-sac of Frankfurter Allee. The tracks along the previous route Fanningerstrasse, Gernotstrasse and Gudrunstrasse are to disappear (see infographic). The district office plans to redesign the streets afterwards.

“With the conversion, we are significantly upgrading the junction at Lichtenberg station,” says BVG spokesman Nils Kremmin. “In the future, the tram will stop right in front of the station entrance, which means that our passengers can change faster, more clearly and, above all, without barriers.”

The schedule and costs of the project are still unclear. Public participation has been running since last Thursday. Deadline is May 21st.
