In the summer, Borussia Dortmund wanted to get Thomas Meunier off the payroll. But BVB did not find a buyer for the Belgian international. Now the Bundesliga club could still get rid of the right-back, even though the transfer window has already closed.
Until deadline day, BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl did everything he could to get Thomas Meunier to another club. But the astronomical salary, which is said to amount to up to nine million euros per year, and his susceptibility to injuries deterred other clubs.
No solution emerged, so Borussia still has to pay its benchwarmer. Now Dortmund should work on an alternative to get Meunier off the payroll despite the closed transfer window.
According to the online portal “voetbalkrant”, the German runner-up is negotiating with the professional about terminating his contract. If the talks are successful, Club Bruges would apparently already have an interested party.
BVB: Thomas Meunier soon to be off the payroll?
The 62-time national player is said to have already reached an agreement with the top Belgian team on a strongly performance-based contract. As soon as Meunier and BVB have agreed to end the collaboration, the transfer can go ahead, it is said.
“I am 31 years old and still have a lot to experience abroad. It was never my goal to return to Belgium any time soon. If there is a club I could return to one day, it is Club Brugge,” Meunier told La Dernière Heure in July.
Now the plans of the former Paris Saint-Germain defender, who at the time dreamed of playing in England or Spain, appear to have changed.
