At Borussia Dortmund, Anthony Modeste has so far fallen short of expectations. Stefan Effenberg made a surprising statement about the performance of the new BVB signing – and also criticized FC Bayern.
In Dortmund’s bitter 3-2 defeat on Saturday at his ex-club 1. FC Köln, Modeste “was again missing a bit of luck,” stated Effenberg in his “Sport1” column.
“Here you have to see Dortmund’s playing system, which is more geared towards speed. Switching from this philosophy, which has distinguished Dortmund in recent years, doesn’t happen overnight,” added the 54-year-old .
Anthony Modeste “the right man for BVB”
Despite Modeste’s manageable performance so far, Borussia should stick with the 34-year-old Frenchman, according to Effenberg.
“He needs a chest release where he does one or two stalls in a game and I think his head will be clear again. That’s why I still say he’s the right man for BVB,” said the former national player.
After the third defeat in the eighth Bundesliga game, Effenberg warned against “always going to extremes”. “If Dortmund should win the game against FC Bayern next week, they’ll be German champions again. That’s too extreme for me.”
FC Bayern also “too inconsistent”
Bayern Munich, who were without a win four times in a row before beating Bayer Leverkusen 4-0, have been “too inconsistent” so far this season, wrote Effenberg. “Who is really consistent in the Bundesliga? There is no team for me so far.”
In his opinion, BVB should have “put the lid on it” in Cologne in the first half. However, despite a few good opportunities for coach Edin Terzic’s team, it remained a narrow 1-0 lead. After the break, FC turned the game around.
In his analysis, Effenberg pointed out that BVB was missing “a very important factor” in Mats Hummels. The 33-year-old was out due to a cold.
