Midfield gap closed
Now it’s official: Borussia Dortmund has strengthened the midfield with Marcel Sabitzer. The 29-year-old has signed a contract with BVB until June 30, 2027. The Austrian international is the 15th transfer between the Black and Yellows and FC Bayern. Most recently, the Revierklub brought Niklas Süle (27) from Munich on a free transfer a year ago, with Raphaël Guerreiro (29) a player already went the opposite way this summer.

€19 million including bonuses
According to reports, BVB will pay up to 19 million euros including bonuses for Sabitzer, who is due to travel to the USA on Tuesday and close the gap in the center of midfield. With Jude Bellingham (20; Real Madrid), Mahmoud Dahoud (27; Brighton) and Guerreiro, Dortmund lost three options there. As a replacement, the black and yellow presented Felix Nmecha (22; VfL Wolfsburg), who was controversial among the fans.
Bayern paid 15 million euros for Sabitzer to RB Leipzig in 2021 and will probably even make a small transfer profit. However, the Austrian was not able to assert himself at FCB. In 54 games (two goals), Sabitzer was only on the pitch for an average of 38 minutes. He was on loan at Man United for the first half of 2023, where he quickly earned a place as a regular before a meniscus injury stopped him in the finale of the season. After Konrad Laimer (26; RB Leipzig) signed, Sabitzer had long been considered a sales candidate at Bayern.
Sabitzer from Bayern to BVB: Even more power
“Marcel is an experienced player who has been playing at the top international level for years. He fits exactly the profile we were looking for: a central midfielder who will strengthen us both defensively and offensively as a box-to-box player. Marcel is physically strong and also exudes a lot of goal threat. We are convinced that his personality will also be an important pillar of the team and that he will help us to become even more effective in hard-fought games,” explained BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl.

Sabitzer himself said: “I can’t wait to finally join the team and wear the BVB jersey. The discussions with Borussia Dortmund’s managers were excellent and showed me how ambitious the club wants to be in the coming years. I would like to do my part to ensure that BVB achieves its goals and that it has every reason to celebrate something special with its fans again as soon as possible.”
