BVB should keep Akanji extension and loan as an emergency solution

Schweizer is to be sold

Should Manuel Akanji not find a new club to which Borussia Dortmund can sell the Swiss defender by the end of the summer transfer window, BVB could, according to “picture“-Newspaper try again with a short-term extension. Thus, if the working paper were extended by another year, until 2024, the black and yellow would want to get the option of initially lending the 27-year-old.

Akanji had rejected an extension in Dortmund, as sports director Sebastian Kehl explained in May. He does not play a role in coach Edin Terzic’s plans and is to be sold for the last chance of a transfer this summer – the transfer window closes on September 1st. However, no buyer seems to be found who wants to pay the salary in addition to the Dortmund transfer fee (from 20 million euros). According to “Bild”, Akanji is demanding 10 million euros from a new employer. Inter Milan should show interest. Manchester United is also considered a candidate who would pay the salary. If no buyer were found, the contingency plan with renewal and loan to then sell Akanji in 2023 could be considered.

“Manuel has value, he’s an outstanding centre-back. We’re relaxed because the transfer market is still open for a few more weeks,” Kehl said in July. According to Akanji’s wish not to extend his BVB contract, the planning for the current season would have been aligned. Niklas Süle (FC Bayern) and Nico Schlotterbeck (Freiburg) came on for the center of defence. Akanji has to go, one way or the other.
