BVB share: embarrassing setback for BVB – Werder celebrates coup

With a dark expression and clear words, the Dortmund football teacher commented on the inexplicable blackout of his team in the 2: 3 (1: 0) against Werder Bremen. “The way we score three goals after the 88th minute is brutally stupid and brutally annoying,” complained the 39-year-old at the end of his successful streak of nine wins as BVB head coach. The way his team carelessly gambled away the seemingly certain 2-0 was unworthy of a title aspirant. “Despite a poor performance you have to win the game with a 2-0 lead,” Terzic said.

After goals from Julian Brandt (45th + 2) and Raphael Guerreiro (77th), the happy ending and the lead in the table seemed within reach. The flattering lead consoled everyone involved that – as before with the victories over Leverkusen (1-0) and Freiburg (3-1) – many playful wishes remained unfulfilled.

BVB captain Marco Reus was visibly embarrassed that BVB was the first team in the long history of the Bundesliga to concede three goals from the 89th minute: “Of course, this is a shock for all of us. In this way, we can that didn’t happen. It wasn’t just the fans who were frustrated, it was us too. We have to talk about it, we will.” Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel looked similarly dismayed: “We couldn’t put the same energy on the pitch as Bremen.”

Lee Buchanan’s follow-up goal (89th) was still an acceptable blemish. But after more goals from Niklas Schmidt (90′ + 3′) and Oliver Burke (90′ + 5′) the chants of the BVB fans turned into a catcall. “After the 1:2 the tremors started,” Terzic described his team’s slump. In view of the courageous appearance of the Bremen team, who are better in many ways, the Rose successor refrained from whitewashing: “We’re talking about a deserved defeat here.”

All of Borussia’s hopes of finally finding more stability after years of constant form fluctuations turned out to be wishful thinking. In terms of passion and playfulness, the newcomer easily stole the show from the title aspirant and should have been in the lead earlier. The late hits by Niklas Schmidt (90+3) and Oliver Burke (90+5) were the just reward.

Even Ole Werner, who is not exactly known for great emotions, enjoyed the magical moment to the fullest: “You can’t imagine such a spectacular gameplay even as a child. Experiencing these moments in such a stadium is what you became a footballer for,” he enthused Werder coach, “there was no holding back at 3:2. It was a turbulent game with a better ending for us.”

After the two draws against Wolfsburg and Stuttgart and the Dortmund coup, the promoted team is in a brilliant position. Goalscorer Schmidt reviewed the spectacle with shining eyes: “That was the best moment of my career. It was pure emotion, you can’t even describe it.” A dream came true for goal-scorer Burke as well. Curious: As in the 2-2 win against Stuttgart, he scored again in the 90th + 5th minute. “Yes, I know, this seems like my lucky minute. I don’t know if I like sitting on the bench, but I don’t mind coming in and scoring,” he commented with a smile.
