The transfer of midfielder Felix Nmecha from VfL Wolfsburg to Borussia Dortmund is perfect.
The 22-year-old has a long-term contract with BVB (Borussia Dortmund) until June 30, 2028, as the German soccer runners-up announced on Monday.
Even before his now official move to BVB, there had been discussions because supporters of the Revierclub had criticized posts by Felix Nmecha on social media as homophobic and anti-queer. Nmecha recently explained via Instagram that he loves everyone, does not discriminate against anyone and is neither homophobic nor transphobic.
“We are aware,” said managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke and club president Reinhold Lunow on the BVB website, “that the upcoming transfer has also caused criticism in the past few days due to two Internet postings that Felix shared. We were It’s therefore important to have a deep dialogue with the player about their beliefs and values.”
Nmecha is “very young, his religion is deeply rooted in him and he – like all of us – is certainly not perfect. But in intensive discussions he absolutely convinced us that he has no transphobic or homophobic ideas,” affirmed Watzke and Lunow: “Felix himself emphasized that he respects and loves all people, regardless of their skin color, religion or sexual orientation.”
Nmecha explained in a short BVB video that some things were taken out of context. “Of course I’m a Christian, but I love everyone and I don’t discriminate,” said the professional. “I hope the fans will give me a chance to get to know myself and see that hopefully I’m a great person.”
Sportingly, BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl was happy about the reinforcement. “Felix Nmecha is a fast, technically skilled and physically strong player who will enhance our midfield both offensively and defensively with his profile,” said Kehl. “I’m thrilled and can’t wait to play in front of the amazing fans at this stadium,” said Nmecha.
The Dortmunders were silent about the exact change modalities. According to reports, the transfer fee should be around 30 million euros. Nmecha, who is to replace Jude Bellingham, who has switched to Real Madrid, at BVB and will receive shirt number 8, still had a contract in Wolfsburg until June 30, 2025. The brother of striker Lukas Nmecha had recently developed well in sport and also in March Completed an international match for the German national team.
