Surgery at the end of 2022
BVB professional Marius Wolf made it public that he had to undergo heart surgery at the end of last year. “I had atrial fibrillation. The heart rhythm was not normal. I noticed that clearly,” said the 27-year-old on “19:09 – the black and yellow talk” from “Ruhr news‘ and ‘Radio 91.2’. “You get queasy and weird at first because you don’t know what it is.”
At the beginning of October, the winger missed two games due to circulatory problems, but then returned to the squad. Wolf was missing against Union Berlin due to an infection before BVB announced the premature end of the 2022 sporting year for the player at the beginning of November. Because of an “infection-related disturbance of the vestibular system,” it said. The club did not provide any further information.

There were only three days between the onset of the symptoms and the surgical intervention. “It was a sleepless night. I was lying in bed at home not knowing what was going on. I won’t describe the thoughts now, but it definitely wasn’t nice,” reported Wolf. “I was also told relatively quickly that I had to do the surgery, that there was no way around it as a competitive athlete.”
BVB professional Wolf can “do everything” again
Only the closest family members knew about the minimally invasive procedure in a Frankfurt special clinic, in which, according to him, partial tissue in the heart was destroyed. “If a doctor says it’s going to be okay, that’s one thing. But that still doesn’t scare you. It is and will remain an intervention on the heart,” said Wolf about his concerns about his health and career.

According to him, the operation went smoothly and after ten days Wolf was able to train again, but initially alone. “I had to take a blood thinner for a month, so I wasn’t allowed to play team sports,” he explained. From January he was “medication-free” again and could “do anything”. Nevertheless, the thought of the intervention is still present. “I would be lying if I said it’s completely gone, but you’re so focused on the pitch that you don’t have time to think about everything else,” said Wolf, who also says to himself when in doubt: “You played football for 90 minutes, you can’t be that bad.”
