Borussia Dortmund officially announced what had already been indicated on Wednesday: After the contract extension with Marco Reus (33), BVB will also keep Mats Hummels (34) at the club beyond the summer. The defender signed a new working paper until 2024.
“It’s very good that Mats, with his experience and leadership skills, will still be available to our young team in the coming season,” stressed sporting director Sebastian Kehl. The defender, who has captained the last seven games, is “a very, very important player for this team because he gives them a lot of hierarchy, of leadership.”
Hummels himself said: “Everyone knows how much fun I have playing at Signal Iduna Park with our amazing fans. I didn’t take the decision lightly. It was a long deliberation process. Now, at the end of the season, I can say: I’m really up for another year.” Originally, his contract would have expired in the summer after four years in his second term. The 75-time national player returned to Dortmund from FC Bayern in 2019 for a fee of 30.5 million euros, where he played between 2008 and 2016. A total of 467 appearances for BVB, 158 of them since the return. Next Saturday Hummels could win his third championship with Dortmund and his seventh personally.
