BVB: Marcel Schmelzer ends his career after this season

10th place for BVB record players

Marcel Schmelzer (34) will end his career after this season. The left-back, whose contract with Borussia Dortmund expires, reported this on Thursday via Instagram. The defender has been part of the BVB professional squad since 2008, making him the most loyal player in the Bundesliga. With the club he was twice German champion and three times cup winner.

Schmelzer played 367 games for Dortmund, in which he contributed seven goals and 34 assists. In the ranking of the most frequently used players in BVB history, the left-footed player is tenth. Born in Magdeburg, he had not played in the past two seasons due to a knee injury. Already in the previous season there was a threat of farewell before his originally expiring contract was extended for another season. This was for insurance reasons, since that way Schmelzer was able to complete his rehabilitation at BVB.

“Unfortunately, injuries have thrown me back again and again in the last two years. In this context, I would like to thank BVB for allowing me to do my rehabilitation here again,” said Schmelzer in a farewell video. He could not answer how things will continue for him after the end of his career. “I don’t know what’s coming, but I’m looking forward to the challenges,” said Schmelzer, who, alongside BVB, also made 16 appearances for the German national team.
