BVB and Dynamo Kyiv faced each other in a benefit match for Ukraine. Although Borussia lost the game, the focus of the duel in Dortmund was anything but sport.
Borussia Dortmund lost the benefit game against the Ukrainian flagship club Dynamo Kyiv 2: 3 (1: 3), but completely different numbers were much more important on an emotional evening. The game brought 400,000 euros to help people in need in Ukraine. A total of 35,000 spectators came.
“As President of Borussia Dortmund, I am proud of those who came today and made sure that people got something to eat and drink,” said Reinhard Rauball on ZDF.
DFB President: “Such a game means variety”
Even before kick-off, tears flowed from some Dynamo supporters in the stands as Ukraine’s national anthem was sung, and many spectators held up posters with inscriptions such as “Stop War – Stop Putin”, “Save Mariupol” or simply “Peace”.
What happened on the pitch quickly became a minor matter, the BVB goals by Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (4th) and Tom Rothe (65th) were celebrated as well as the goals of the guests. “The tanks are rolling in Ukraine, people live in constant fear. A game like this means variety,” said DFB President Bernd Neuendorf.
