First, the club had asked him to resign his post. Otherwise the club will “make an appropriate decision”. Schröder didn’t even think about resigning, BVB acted.

The reason: Gerhard Schröder has been in the service of warlord Vladimir Putin (69) for years. He is the head of the supervisory board at the oil giant Rosneft, has a top position at Nord Stream and is actually supposed to become a supervisory board member at the Gazprom group.

BVB has now kicked him out because he did not want to resign from these posts.

BVB announced today: “BV. Borussia 09 eV Dortmund revokes Gerhard Schröder’s honorary membership with immediate effect. The president of the association, Dr. Reinhard Rauball the former Federal Chancellor in a personal interview this morning. The BV. Borussia 09 eV Dortmund had already announced on Monday: Given the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and the associated serious violation of applicable international law, the assumption of management positions in Russian state-owned companies by a BVB honorary member is unacceptable.

The association had previously made harsh criticism: “In our opinion, in a situation in which innocent people die from bombs every single day, it is not only mandatory to make a verbal commitment against any act of war (this was given by Gerhard Schröder), but also the clear will and the conviction to have to forego management positions in Russian state-owned companies.”
