Special praise from Terzic
Julian Brandt seemed to be everywhere on the pitch. And after the 2-0 (0-0) win at Werder Bremen, the 26-year-old from Borussia Dortmund was also omnipresent in the media. Brandt is currently one of the most sought-after men at BVB. Not only because he scored the final goal in his hometown on Saturday. He is one of the main figures in Dortmund’s upswing with six wins in six competitive games since the beginning of the year and for coach Edin Terzic the biggest challenge so far this year with the round of 16 first leg in the Champions League on Wednesday (9 p.m. / DAZN) against FC Chelsea the beacon of hope in the black and yellow gifted squad.
“Jule has developed extremely this season. He’s one of our most consistent players. He’s completely fit, he’s always one of the strongest runners,” said Terzic in Bremen. “And he’s extremely important for us on the ball.” Before the game against Werder, Brandt found the last words before the team left the dressing room. “And he did that really well,” praised Terzic. “That’s when you noticed that he wanted to be at the forefront.”
Schlotterbeck to Dembélé: BVB’s most expensive additions
The national player is growing more and more into the role of the leading player. On the pitch, he stimulates his team’s game and forms Dortmund’s creative center with Jude Bellingham (19). Off the pitch, he is currently filling the vacuum left by previous leaders like Mats Hummels (34) and captain Marco Reus (33). The offensive player sets the tone.
Brandt: BVB opportunities from the bench “a difference” – most joker goals
“We’re feeling euphoric, which is slowly building up,” Brandt said of his team’s upswing since the start after the winter break. “Everyone does their part and that’s good for the collective.” The quality of the squad is shown by the fact that Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (18) scored the opener against Bremen in the 67th minute, just one minute after coming on as a substitute and scored Dortmund’s tenth joker goal in the Bundesliga season – top value in the upper house.

“Who’s being shot in the 60th minute at the moment, that makes a difference,” said Brandt. At the same time he warned: “But we also have to be honest with ourselves. There are issues that we can do even better.” They are “not the best team in the world. We just have to be a little careful there.” Brandt sees one reason for his personal upswing in a change in diet. “I’ve changed something about myself for a year,” he reported. Because of skin problems, he had to eat a gluten-free and histamine-free diet. And that has a positive side effect: “I have a different level of fitness.” However: “I also scored goals before. The changeover is not decisive for this.”
BVB professional Julian Brandt on the future: “I want to do it in peace”
Brandt is not currently concerned about his future in Dortmund. His contract expires in June 2024. Exploiting his top form and pushing for an extension is not his thing. “I’m a structured guy,” he said. “I want to have as few sideshows as possible. It’s not that I want to wait. I want to do it in peace.”
To that end, Brandt had already said in January at “Sport1”: “We talked about football romance earlier. If I was involved with another club or if there were any thoughts of a change, BVB would know immediately. I would let the club know first. I’m maybe still a bit ‘old school’.” And: “I sometimes wondered where that came from (rumours of departure; editor’s note). In any case, during the four years in Dortmund, nobody came up to me and said: ‘Jule, we’re considering giving you up.’ I never got nervous about it.”
