In the summer of 2021, Sergio Gómez finally left Borussia Dortmund. He had missed the breakthrough at BVB. Twelve months later, the Spaniard is said to be a topic at several top international clubs – notably Manchester City.
Three appearances for the pros, 14 games in the U23s and nine in the U19s shirt: At Borussia Dortmund Sergio Gómez didn’t leave a big footprint, to put it mildly.
The U17 and U19 European champion, who can be used in a variety of ways on the left flank, was considered a great talent when he signed from the FC Barcelona youth team in January 2018. But he couldn’t prove that in black and yellow.
In 2019, BVB passed him on to the Spanish second division club SD Huesca, initially on loan. In 2021, the Belgian record champions RSC Anderlecht secured Gomez’s services for a manageable 2.25 million euros.
From the BVB siding to the Premier League?
At his new club, the development of the 21-year-old suddenly went through the roof.
Gomez played 49 competitive games for Anderlecht in 2021/2022. As a left-back he had an outstanding 22 direct goals. Rumors were already circulating in the spring that Real Madrid and Chelsea FC had put out feelers after the vertical start.
Manchester City’s interest in Gomez now seems to be much more concrete.
Both “Nieuwsblad” and “The Athletic” report ongoing personal negotiations between the clubs.
According to the British offshoot of the US portal, those responsible for the English champions around team manager Pep Guardiola are keen to guide the former BVB professional to Manchester as a perspective player – even regardless of the commitment of Marc Cucurella (Brighton & Hove Albion), who as a Desired solution for the left side of the defense in the Sky Blues applies, but is very expensive.
Guessing the transfer fee – market value quadrupled
Gomez recently expressed sympathy for City on “Le Soir”. He likes the Guardiola team as much as his ex-club Barca “for the way they play,” said the youngster.
It is currently still unclear how much money City would have to make loose for a possible transfer.
According to “transfermarkt.de”, however, Gomez’s market value has quadrupled to ten million euros within the last season.
