BVB: Donyell Malen is toying with the Premier League – back to Arsenal?

Donyell Malen hopes to get another chance in England. “Since I played in England as a youth, it’s a nice dream to still play in the Premier League,” said the BVB professional in an interview with “Voetbalzone“. Malen revealed that his favorite club there is still Arsenal FC. If there is an opportunity, the attacker would like to return to the Gunners.

Malen moved from Ajax Amsterdam’s youth ranks to the Arsenal academy in 2015. However, he didn’t make it into the first team in London, so he moved to PSV Eindhoven two years later. There he became a Dutch national player within two years.

“In the course of a football career there are always points where you have to make decisions,” said Malen, looking back on his Arsenal farewell. “I trained with the first one and I was seventeen or eighteen at the time. I made progress, but I just felt like I had to play professional football.” At Arsenal, the striker only had appearances in the U18 Premier League, Premier League 2 and UEFA Youth League.

“I also had a lot of former teammates back then who I saw playing professional football while I was still playing as a youth,” Malen continued. “So I knew it was the right move and my gut feeling told me so. So I went to PSV.” After just six months, he made his debut for the professionals, for whom he contributed 55 goals and 24 assists in 116 games until his 30 million euro transfer to BVB.

Malen: Difficult BVB season is also related to missing the title

Despite a contract that runs until 2026, Malen is allowed to leave Dortmund in the summer for a fee of between 40 million and 50 million euros, according to “Sport Bild”. Financially strong Premier League clubs could raise this amount. For Malen, the fact that BVB is only fighting for the Champions League places and not for the championship again is also due to the lost title last season. “As a group, you will always remember what happened,” he emphasized.
