“Things not developing as hoped”
Borussia Dortmund and Nico Schulz are going their separate ways four years after the €25.5 million signing from TSG Hoffenheim and a season without a competitive game. BVB officially announced this on Thursday. The contract, which was originally valid until 2024, was terminated with immediate effect.
According to media reports, BVB will pay Schulz a severance payment of EUR 2.5 million for the termination of the cooperation, which corresponds to around half the annual salary, which is said to have been up to EUR 5.5 million.

Schulz had been informed by coach Edin Terzic before last season that he was no longer planned. However, the left-back did not find a new club. Schulz was not in team training for a long period of time after his former partner had filed a criminal complaint against him for various cases of domestic violence.
“We are all aware that things have not developed as hoped for Borussia Dortmund and Nico Schulz in recent years. Nevertheless, we wish Nico all the best for his sporting and personal future,” said sporting director Sebastian Kehl. In total, Schulz played 61 games (one goal) for BVB.
