Bundesliga soccer club Borussia Dortmund is playing a benefit game against the Ukrainian flagship club Dynamo Kyiv on April 26 at Signal Iduna Park.
“We stand by the Ukrainians, together with the BVB family we have already brought many tons of relief supplies to the country and now we would like to collect money,” said BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke. On February 24, Russian troops invaded Ukraine.
The net proceeds of the benefit game will benefit an organization “that we are currently selecting carefully and that ensures that Ukrainians in need are helped directly. That’s what we at BVB are responsible for,” emphasized Managing Director Carsten Cramer.
The game takes place three days after the hit game at champions Bayern Munich. “But even if it should have taken place three days before this game, we would definitely have been on the pitch. Nothing is more important at the moment than standing up for peace together and helping the Ukrainians in times of this humanitarian catastrophe,” said Dortmund coach Marco Rose .
Borussia had reached an agreement with Dynamo on Thursday evening to host the match. The team as well as the coaching and support staff of the top Ukrainian club are invited to Dortmund.
BVB is currently in talks with the European Football Union (UEFA) about the kick-off time, as this is an international game date.
