Filling jug set in the storm
Borussia Dortmund’s head coach Edin Terzic has encouraged his current reserve player Sébastien Haller. “Sébastien didn’t have an easy time. Still, we see how he deals with it. He’s very hard-working,” said the football teacher on Friday about the 29-year-old striker, who has only been a substitute at BVB for almost two months.
According to Terzic, nothing is likely to change, at least in the short term. “He is trying everything to improve his situation. But we know that we have three guys for the position up front,” said the BVB coach, referring to national player Niclas Füllkrug (30), top talent Youssoufa Moukoko (18), who gets even less playing time, and Haller.
The 29-year-old Ivory Coast international has survived testicular cancer and came back brilliantly last season with nine goals and five assists in 19 games, but has failed to score in nine appearances so far this season. “Sébastien will fight his way back. We are very sure that he will be very important for us over the course of the season,” said Terzic, who will play with his team at VfB Stuttgart on Saturday.
Füllkrug, who has scored four competitive goals for Dortmund to date, was signed shortly before the transfer deadline primarily so that Terzic would have a physically strong center forward available when Haller takes part in the Africa Cup of Nations in the winter. In the past few weeks, the ex-Bremen player has been set, even if he has not yet reached his quota, which made him the joint top scorer in the Bundesliga in the previous season. Julian Brandt (27) has been the most successful player for BVB across all competitions this season with six goals.
